Medical Mission for the Dumagats of Sierra Madre

The Dumagats have to take a 2-hour banca ride (if there is banca available to them) to get to Norazagaray, Bulacan to trade yantok for rice, salt, and medicines. On the other hand, the Aetas have to wait for the truck that comes to their place once a week. This is where they get the chance to trade their charcoal with some supplies that the truck had brought like instant noodles, junk foods, canned goods, and medicines, if there's any. Without the truck, the Aetas will travel by foot, carrying loads of charcoal and will arrive a day after at the marketplace. This trading system emanated greatly ...

A Sorta Fairy Tale

As an 18th birthday gift for her niece Janzen, Mar assembled an almost all-girl (Brymac being the exception) production team (complete with a director and a PA!) for a photo shoot last Saturday.

Of course I had to be in on the production. I am a (self-declared) photographer, after all, and I have an ID to prove it (long short story, ask Markku or Hana for details)! So I insinuated myself into the action and, with my pretending-to-be-a-lomo-cam little point and shoot, snapped away on my very first ever photo shoot. Hehe. I tried to get the in-between-poses shots and let the real photographers take the real shots, and here is what I came up with. Not bad, eh?

Happy Birthday, Janzen!

Una't Huli

First is an ordinal number. If you came in first in a race, somebody must have come in second. Otherwise, it wasn't a race and nobody came in first or second. If you were awarded first honor, somebody must have been awarded the second honor. Otherwise, what they gave you is just an honor. You celebrate a first birthday on the assumption that there are going to be more of them in the future. Otherwise, it's just a birthday. Same thing's true with anniversaries. You celebrate a first anniversary presuming you will be celebrating a second one the next year, and maybe even a golden one forty-nine years later.

So when you talk about a first kiss, you're obviously assuming that there's going to be another one. You can't say, "we had our first kiss" if it only happened once, especially if there is no indication that it's going to happen again. You just say "we kissed." Or you say it like Cookie does and say it was the first and last.

I have at least someone to point to (other than myself) to show the alternative is by no means hypothetical; it is real. The choice of coming back to the country, or indeed staying put, may now take on the aspect of the road not taken, or the one littered with sharp stones, but as Gutierrez shows, that is the illusion and not the reality. It is the paradise espied in the distance that is the illusion and not the reality. Or it is the mirage and not the oasis.

I had a similar experience when I was in the United States three years ago. The salesman in the department store where I bought a memory stick for a camcorder was a Filipino, and he was absolutely delighted when he discovered I was a “kababayan” [fellow countryman]. He said he thought at first I was Japanese. I wanted the 128 MB, but they had only the 64 MB. But not to worry,...

Seeing the things that really matter

I’m reposting an article that was originally published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on April 21, 2004. I hope we can all pick up something from it.

Sacrifices
written by Conrado de Quiros

IBARRA Gutierrez has written a very inspiring piece that surprisingly hasn’t yet found its way in print. So I have the honor of doing it for him.

Gutierrez says he’s finishing his master’s degree in New York, where he’s lived the past year, and is all set to come home soon. Not just to revisit for a while but to reoccupy his teaching post in the University of the Philippines (UP). This has raised no small amount of eyebrows from Filipinos and Americans alike. He is graduating this May, and it’s all his friends can do to understand why on earth he doesn’t just stay put and get a job there. But Gutierrez hasn’t just defied convention in not opting to remain in New York, he has defied reason in having no reluctance to go back to Manila. I reproduce his piece in its near entirety, it’s worth eve...

Spinach Alfredo

This is a recipe for Classic Fettuccine Alfredo, without the adornments. I had a pack of spinach fettuccine lying around, courtesy of Micka, so I used it instead of the regular fettuccine. Hence, Spinach Alfredo. For variety, you may add whatever other ingredients you want (bacon, shrimps, tuna, etc.). What's important is that you start with the basics.

Some notes on the ingredients: If you're on a budget, go ahead and substitute some of the ingredients. Of course the end product wouldn't be as rich, but it's guaranteed to taste good anyway. If you're having trouble finding fresh parmesan, use the grated parmesan cheese packaged in canisters. You may also substitute the heavy cream with all-purpose cream and the butter with margarine. We use white pepper in the recipe so as not to have any dark specks in the sauce, but black pepper will do just fine.

Some measurement shortcuts: One pack of butter is equivalent to 1 cup, so for 1/2 cup, just cut the butter in half. Some groceries ...

Nutella Self-frosting Cupcakes

I wanted to make cupcakes but I was too lazy to go to the store to buy ingredients, so I had to make do with stuff I already have. I did some web-browsing for a recipe and saw one for Nutella Frosted Cupcakes.

Fortunately, we never run out of Nutella in the house. I tweaked the recipe (specifically, I changed the amount of butter) so now it's a slightly modified version of a recipe that I found here, which is a slightly modified version of a recipe originally published in Donna Hay magazine.

Approximately 40 minutes later (including prep time), I had a dozen cupcakes. I made a second batch and, for variety, I added 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, which gave it a more chocolate-y taste but took away from the visual contrast between the cupcake and the "frosting."

Anyway, to describe this recipe, it's easy, easy, easy.
And yum, yum,
